SUMMARY:DEI 401: A Board's Impact on DEI
DESCRIPTION:The National Council of Nonprofits defines a Board’s responsibility being “to steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound\, ethical\, and legal governance and financial management policies\, as well as by making sure the nonprofit has adequate resources to advance its mission.” Research from McKinsey\, PWC\, and others show that organizations that have diversity in their leadership are more likely to outperform their peers. Yet\, it is more than just diversity of people that makes an organization perform at its best. \nAuthor and DEI Expert James Mckim will explore how nonprofit boards can ignite the performance of their organizations by embracing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion for themselves and their organizations. \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this session\, participants will:\n•    describe how diversity\, equity\, and inclusion can impact your board;\n•    describe how your board can ensure your organization’s leadership\, structure\, and programming is equitable and inclusive;\n•    identify actionable ideas for improving your organization’s performance through DEI. \n \nSponsored by

SUMMARY:DEI 202: From De-Biasing to Allyship
DESCRIPTION:60% of women ages 18 to 29 report that they or a female family member have been sexually harassed. 51% of black Americans say they have personally experienced people using racial slurs against them. 35% of Asian Americans report personally experiencing people making insensitive or offensive comments or negative assumptions about their race or ethnicity. \nWhy is this happening? 100% of people are biased but most do not know it? Research has shown that it is this unconscious implicit bias that causes discrimination and the “isms” that exist in society. This highly interactive workshop will help you understand how to at minimum de-bias yourself so you have better interactions creating a more welcoming environment and even better become an ally so you can spark innovation leveraging beneficial perspectives that improve organizational performance. \nLearning Objectives \nBy the end of this session you will be able to: \n Understand implicit bias \n\nList techniques to de-bias yourself\nIdentify the different types of allyship\nDescribe practical strategies for being an effective ally.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\nSponsored by

SUMMARY:How to Have Difficult Conversations @ NH Nonprofit Conference & Expo 5/18/2023
DESCRIPTION:Someone says something to you that is disrespectful of your heritage. You witness behavior that has sexist overtones. You observe a conversation where someone demeans a person because of their racial identity. Besides your legal and organizational policy obligations\, you need to have a difficult conversation with the person who caused the affront. But how do you have that conversation in a kind and effective way that has a positive outcome? Combining recent research by cognitive neuroscientists such as Dr. Lara Boyd and Dr. Michael Gazzaniga;  conversation experts such as Douglas Stone and Bruce Patton; and discriminatory behavior experts such as Resmaa Menachem\, and Iris Bohnet\,  James McKim will use videos and activities to give you insights into when and how to have these difficult conversations in a productive manner during a session at the upcoming NH Nonprofit Conference & Expo. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Ensuring Equity & Inclusion Through Technology
DESCRIPTION:We use technology – the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or\, as it is sometimes phrased\, to the change and manipulation of the human environment (OED) – to automate our work. Machines and software aid us in making decisions or even making decisions for us. To help us see things and do things that we ourselves cannot do because of lack of time\, lack of knowledge\, or lack of ability. \nBut technology is biased. The World Economic Forum article “Research shows AI is often biased. Here’s how to make algorithms work for all of us” states \, “Bias represents injustice against a person or a group. A lot of existing human bias can be transferred to machines because technologies are not neutral; they are only as good\, or bad\, as the people who develop them.” Even worse\, bias infects our decisions on what technology to use and how we use technology. \nWhy? Because all humans are all biased. And who creates and uses technology? Humans. Consciously or subconsciously\, our biases lead to discrimination. Discrimination either in the development or use of technology. So\, how can we determine how bias impacts our use or development of technology? \nLearning Objectives \nAfter this workshop you will be able to: \n• Describe how bias impacts the development of technology\n• Describe how bias impacts the use of technology\n• Describe how to select technology that minimizes bias
